Board Features - Jaime Loera
Each month, we’ll be highlighting a different member of the board of Faith in Harm Reduction to share more about the people, practices, and values behind our work and the movement at large.
In a phrase or sentence, what is one dream you have for the world?
A dream I have for the world is that all my relations - the two-legged, the four-legged, the creepers, the crawlers, the swimmers, the fliers, the plant, rock, mineral, and liquid nations could be given the dignity and respect they deserve.
What does "Faith in Harm Reduction" mean to you?
"Faith in Harm Reduction" means the ability to fuse spiritual principals into compassionate care for all.
Tell us something about the work you do in Harm Reduction
I have been following the harm reduction pathway of abstinence for the past 28 years and the very fabric of my existence is woven through and through with loving and serving others. I am a peer recovery coach, sponsor, and small business owner that gives back to my community by sharing connections and resources.
What is one Harm Reduction related resource you love?
I love what my dear friend, Sam Rivera, has been spearheading at OnPoint, the nation's first sanctioned safe injection site in NYC. The host of services they deliver to others is truly admirable.
Who or what inspires you in this work?
I am inspired by my 3 daughters who have all chosen careers in helping serve the needs of others and reduce the harms they are experiencing in their lives.
What's one thing you want to see more of in Harm Reduction movements?
I would love to see more open-mindedness in both the harm reduction and the abstinence camps. So many more people could be helped if we did away with siloed thinking and behavior.
Where do you find your own spiritual sustenance?
I have a personal relationship with a Creator of my own understanding that I access through formal prayer and meditation every morning and evening, and through selfless acts of service every chance I get.
Any personal or organizational sites or social media, resources, or calls to action you'd like us to share?
I would like for those new to "Faith in Harm Reduction" in explore the various initiatives we are engaged in and to join us!
